The Beauty, Magic and Nostalgia of Film

About a year and a half ago I took the plunge and finally bought a film camera (after longing for one for years but not being able to fully justify the purchase). Who needs film photography in our 21st Century, Instagram ridden environment anyway? Is it not a little obsolete? I could not disagree more.

Film photography just feels so much more natural, nostalgic and so bewilderingly satisfying than what you would ordinarily experience whilst taking a photo. You will not understand how I class it as "satisfying" unless you have had film developed yourself. I personally use a large roll and take photos over a long period of time, this way by the time you come to developing the film, you will probably have forgotten most of what you photographed, making for a very exciting unveiling experience.

I much prefer the old fashioned, grainy yet equally crisp quality that comes with a good condition film camera over a DSLR any day - it is simply expense that is the problem for many! I would certainly recommend buying film up in bulk as it saves a TON of money, and means you will not have to worry about buying more in the future. Each film will always inevitably come with bad shots, but don't you worry, that is truly the fun of it, not knowing what to expect. No editing, simply spontaneous fun.

Just as vinyl has increased rapidly in popularity over the past couple of years, I hope film will do so too! Even if I inspire just one person to keep the medium of film alive then I will be very satisfied with this blog post.

Below you can see just a few of the photos I have taken with my trusty Olympus OM30 35mm camera (kitted with a 50mm lens). I bought it for £40 on eBay - the price included a case, filters and lots of film - and I know it can perhaps be a bit of a risky purchase but if they seem like a trustworthy seller and they say it is 100% in working condition then go for it! And I urge you not to just splash out on an expensive first hand one from Urban Outfitters, the price just really is not worth it.
